when I say Dyhanchand, the pictures that comes in my mind is of a legendary Hockey player, who could defeat an army of hundred with the swing of his stick. A game that is a pride for our nation India. All these years we have been looking on this game as a game for loosers as India is not able to make a mark on the world. Plethora reasons are there, good coach, lack of fund etc. etc. But what when Dhyanchand was playing, India was not rich as it is now. The problem is not with any of the resons mentioned above. The problem is in the attitude of the country men.
Since every thing is bussiness today, every one is making a wise move to gain on his/her investment, and this being the case Indian Hockey is suffering a serious set back when it comes to sponsership. The on going IPL has no PSU sponsership where the Hockey world cup had justĀ SAIL as a major sponser. The IPL every year watches huge sum of mone being transfered from one part of the country to another. Atleast the Indian government can channelize a part of this money to promote Hockey, afterall there is something called tax in India. The irony is for promoting Hockey Indian cricket star Shewag came, the sad part is he did’nt show up for a single match, this tells how proffessional these players are. The stats shows that in cricket India won the worlcup once and so in hockey, there is no reason to say that country has performed well in crikcet in terms of world cup, infact 2009 world cup India failed ot reach the super six also. The only reason cricket is so popular is, because the game format is different, Hockey tournaments are not as frequent. The domestic hockey league started was considered to be a good sign for promoting the game.
What came good out of this year’s Hockey world cup was the interest Indian crowd showed for the game. Although India eventually thrown of the race but still I was happy to see that stadium count was healthy even the supporters knew India had no chance. May be this a change India is showing, but if we keep this fire alive I feel no reason that one day Hockey will regain its pinnacle where it was once. After all in a country of millions if we can produce Sachin, there is good chance we can find once again Dhyanchand.
